There are many different approaches that need to be considered before you even decide on which set of plans would be needed. Do you have spare or extra lumber around or do you live near a construction site?  Look at what is available first before deciding what direction you are going in.

Another consideration is if this is going to be a permanent structure or a portable one. There are plans for chicken coop’s that do not have a floor. The advantage is that the chickens waste can be used for fertilizer on the spot where it rest and then moved. If moved once a week and your plot of land is large enough, then the grass will not die or be trampled to the point it will not recover.

This approach will not only give you fresh eggs and poultry but a green lush lawn as well. This approach also gives the chickens a fresh source of bugs that they eat from the patch of land in their coop.

Of course, you can do it yourself.  Building a “do it yourself” chicken coop has many advantages.  Doing this will not only give your chickens a safe home but will give you a sense of achievement.   The really cool thing is that this can mean saving you up to 50% off of pre-made (flat packed) chicken coops.

Remember the plans you pick and the color is just to please you. The chickens do not care if their home is two or three different colors. To save money use what supplies are readily available and free. This is as long as you do not care about the color also. Be creative and save money and remember there are many chicken coop plans available for free on the internet.

Raising chickens can be a fun and exciting hobby for you and your family to enjoy for many years to come.
