Chicken Coops: An Introduction

This is site is dedicated to information about chicken coops.  As you probably already know, chicken coops (sometimes misspelled chicken coups) are places that are built to house chickens.  The main goals of a chicken coop are to protect chickens from predators and provide for a healthy and safe moderated climate.

If you are thinking about building a chicken coop, the needs of the birds, nearby predators and your climate will define the construction of your coop.  So it is important to get chicken coop plans that are specific to your situation.

Chicken coops can be a a great family project.   When built near a home, chicken coop designs can be small charming structures, with fanciful decorative touches in a style that matches your taste.  Often times, chicken coops can be smaller than dog runs, so a large area is not usually required.  Feeding is simple too, as feed usually consists of vegetarian scraps and seed.  Really, the food needed is very similar to what you’d find in most bird feeders.

Another thing to consider is that chicken coops are a great idea if you are thinking of an extra income.  All you need is the desire to raise chickens and of course a small area in your backyard.

You should think of your chicken coops as a retreats for your chickens, where hens can breed as well as lay eggs and set your chicken house plans accordingly.   Typically, just like a fancy hotel for people, the chicken coop is usually accompanied by an open-area, or space called a “run.”

The cool thing is that chicken coops are popping up everywhere even in big cities like Boston, and Dallas.  Building a chicken coop and having chickens is a great way to have fresh eggs year round.  Not only that, but raising your own food promotes sustainable living and teaches your children responsibility.  Chickens are also a great source for entertainment.
